Scholarships

Scholarships at Wychwood are awarded at our main points of entry: 11+, 13+ and 16+ and are open to current students and those applying to join the school.

At 11+ and 13+ scholarships may be awarded as: academic, music, creative arts, drama, sports and an all-rounder scholarship, referred to as the Lee Scholarship, after our founder Miss Lee.

At 16+ scholarships may be awarded as academic, music, art, drama, sports and the Lee Scholarship.

In all cases, scholarships are competitive and will only be awarded if the standard merits the award.

Academic Scholarships

At 11+ one Scholarship worth £1,000 p.a. and two Scholarships worth £500 p.a. are offered.

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of the entrance examinations papers.

At 13+ one Scholarship worth £1,000 p.a. and two Scholarships worth £500 p.a. are offered.

Academic Scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of the entrance examinations papers.

At 16+ one Scholarship worth £1,000 p.a. and one Scholarship worth £500 p.a. is offered.

Academic scholarships are awarded on the basis of the results of scholarship papers. Girls take three scholarship papers in subjects of their choice as well as a general paper.

Creative Arts Scholarships

Creative Arts Scholarships are offered at 11+ and 13+ to candidates with outstanding ability in Art, Creative Writing or both. At 16+ we offer a Creative Arts Scholarships to candidates with outstanding ability in Art. We award major scholarships of £1,000 p.a. and minor scholarships of £500 p.a.

Art – Candidates are asked to bring 6 artistic compositions or craft items which will be discussed with the Head of Art. A short unprepared task will be undertaken on the day of the scholarship tests.

Creative Writing – Candidates are asked to bring 6 different pieces of writing, including poetry, a story and a description. These will be discussed with the Head of English. A piece of creative writing will be set on the day of the scholarship tests.

These awards are intended for the support of the pupil’s artistic interest. All Creative Arts award holders are expected to be fully involved in the artistic life of the school.

Drama Scholarships

Drama scholarships are offered at 11+, 13+ or 16+ to candidates with outstanding ability and potential in drama. We award major scholarships of £1,000 p.a. and minor scholarships of £500 p.a.

Drama scholars will be expected to be grade 3 or 4 level at 11+, grade 5 or 6 level at 13+ and grade 6 or 7 level at 16+.

Candidates will be expected to perform two prepared pieces and discuss their love of drama with the head of Drama at audition on the day of the scholarship tests.

These awards are intended for the support of the pupil’s dramatic interests. All drama award holders are expected to be fully involved in the dramatic life of the school.

Music Scholarships

Music Scholarships are offered at 11+, 13+ and 16+ to cover instrumental tuition of up to two instruments including voice.

Music scholars will be expected to be Grade 3 or 4 Level at 11+, Grade 5 or 6 Level at 13+ and Grade 6 or 7 Level at 16+.

Candidates will be expected to play two prepared pieces on their instrument(s) and to do aural tests and sight reading during the day of the scholarship tests.

There is also a single organ scholarship available to cover organ tuition which is awarded to a high-level pianist.

These awards are intended for the support of the pupil’s musical interests. All music award holders are expected to be fully involved in the musical life of the School.

Sports Scholarship

Sports scholarships are offered at 11+, 13+ or 16+ to candidates with outstanding ability and potential in sports. We award major scholarships of £1,000 p.a. and minor scholarships of £500 p.a.

Candidates will take part in a practical session involving netball and hockey. They will also have an individual interview with the Director of Sport when they will have the opportunity to discuss their achievements and their favourite sports on the day of the scholarship tests.

These awards are intended for the support of the pupil’s sporting interests. All sport award holders are expected to be fully involved in the sporting life of the school.

The Lee Scholarship

The Lee Scholarships are offered at 11+, 13+ or 16+ to candidates who demonstrate potential in at least three areas of school life: academia, music, creative arts, drama or sport. We award major scholarships of £1,000 p.a. and minor scholarships of £500 p.a.

Candidates will not have reached the levels required for the individual scholarships but will be demonstrating the potential for high achievement within the three chosen areas. Candidates will be interviewed by the relevant heads of department and will need to demonstrate their abilities by audition or performance on the scholarship day. These awards are intended for the support of the pupil’s individual development. All Lee Scholarship holders are expected to be fully involved in the life of the school.

Scholarships for 2019 Entry

The Scholarship tests for 11+ and 16+ have now passed.

The 13+ Academic, Creative Arts, Drama, Music and Sport scholarship auditions will take place in February 2019. To be considered for a scholarship, girls must be registered for a place at the school.
