World Book Day
13th February 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians,
On Thursday 5th March Wychwood will be celebrating World Book Day! This event, now in its 23rd year, is a worldwide celebration of books and reading that aims to give every child the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading.
This year, Wychwood is delighted to welcome the author Karen McCombie to our school on World Book Day. Karen is a prolific and varied author, writing on everything from friends and family to ghosts and magic. Her latest book, Little Bird Flies, is an engaging story of a young girl attempting to leave her home in nineteenth-century Scotland for the New World and has been long-listed for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2020. Girls will have the opportunity to buy some of Karen’s books on World Book Day, thanks to the support of Blackwell’s book shop, and details can be found on the attached letter.
In addition to our author event, we are planning to have a second hand book sale for the whole school. If you have any books at home that you would like to donate for this sale, please send them to school no later than the week commencing Monday 2nd March for my attention.
The proceeds of the second hand book sale this year will go to the charity Book Aid International which sends books and provides learning support for libraries and schools across Africa, as well as in refugee camps and poorer countries affected by disaster. (www.bookaid.org)
Access to books and reading changes lives, and we thank you for your continued support.
