Votes for Women 1918 – 2018: Lower School Cross Curricular Project 2018: Tuesday 3rd July, 3.00pm
28th June 2018
Dear parents and guardians,
This year has the staff reverting to form for the ‘cross curricular project’ for the Lower School, but for all of you this will make little sense unless you have an older daughter. The most important thing to note is that you, friends and extended family are all warmly invited to a play performed and partly written by all girls in the Remove, Inters and Lower Transits on 3rd July, next Tuesday afternoon, at 3.00pm in the School Hall. Everyone is involved.
Starting today, 28th June, the girls have four days ‘off timetable’ but they will still be following an alternative academic timetable. Remove and Inters will have lessons together and the Lower Transits will continue to be taught as a discrete class. The timetables are opposite and girls have been given these in advance. Please can girls be in uniform as usual. We are happy for them to rehearse in drama clothes once in school on Monday and Tuesday.
All lessons have been specifically prepared by staff and will be subject based observations taken on something related to the women’s suffrage movement through to the fourth wave feminism of 2018. The range of material covered will be great, and the girls have already had two preparatory assemblies drawn from the presentation of suffrage in Mary Poppins and also feminist readings of the 1960s musicals The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. They have also spent an hour spent watching Kate Adie’s wonderful recent documentary on Women in World War One. You can watch it on the iPlayer.
Armed with new knowledge, on Friday afternoon all girls write monologues inspired by aspects of the studies that have especially touched them. These monologues are then used by Mrs Mandy Constance, who wrote last year’s 120th anniversary play. She writes a play especially for the girls on the theme of the project and mostly in their voices. It is a very empowering experience for them.
On Monday 2nd July the girls will rehearse in the hall all day, and on the morning of 3rd July the play really comes together so that by Tuesday afternoon there is an excellent performance representing significant learning.
For the last two years there have been ‘extraordinary’ cross curricular projects in the form of the whole school Somme centenary residential trip 2016 and the 120th Wychwood anniversary play in 2017. Thus we have the unusual situation of all three year groups being new to this experience. We do hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday afternoon, where learning for learning’s sake will definitely be the order of the day.
