General Studies Week
6th June 2019
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We will be having a General Studies week for Study I in the week of Monday 17th June to Friday 21st June 2019 as detailed on the school calendar. This is designed to be an interesting and stimulating week for the girls after their examination week and in advance of the busy end of school year.
The only charges for this week will be transport and ticket costs and these will be added to the girls’ Trinity term bills. The week is about moving away from any given curriculum and it forms an important part of the Study Extension programme. Girls will develop life skills, general knowledge, and of course share a week with peers where the focus is more light-hearted, experiential and fun, for the most part.
The week will start with a trip to London with a visit to Borough Market, Tate Modern, the Royal Academy, Covent Garden for supper and the Phoenix Theatre in Charing Cross Road for Come Far Away, the new and highly acclaimed musical of the 9,000 residents of the Newfoundland town of Gander who opened their doors to over 6,500 strangers for 5 days following the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York when 38 planes were diverted there. We will meet the girls at Oxford Parkway at 10.00am and aim to be on the 10.05pm train back arriving at Oxford Parkway at 11.02pm as the show is only 100 minutes long. Obviously we will let you know on the day in case of any delays.
Tuesday is ‘in house’ with outside companies providing both Self Defence and First Aid courses. Girls are having a late 10.00am start on account of the late finish at the Next Steps preliminary meetings between yourselves and your daughters’ tutors from 6.30pm – 8.00pm. There is a short introduction in the Hall at 6.30pm.
On Wednesday we will take the girls for a Daylesford Cookery Course and a visit to Chipping Camden. We will leave early at 7.45am as the first course starts at 9.00am. We are usually back shortly after the end of the school day because of traffic.
On Thursday we have more on Next Steps with post-18 Options and we are thrilled that Careers adviser Liz Reece, who has worked with us for many years now, is able to deliver a day on skills analysis, researching courses, apprenticeships and personal statements. Following this the girls have a Finance talk with a member of Barclays bank. To lighten the day we will have a barbecue on the lawn from 5.00 – 6.30pm that evening which is prepared by the girls from 4.00pm.
Friday is the final experience of the week and we will go to Hill End for outdoor activities and woodland survival skills, returning to school in time for the end of the school day.
Opposite are the detailed meal requirements for day girls and any gear required for specific activities. Day girls can order a packed lunch from school where necessary but often prefer to bring lunch options from home.
Lessons will resume on Monday 24th June as normal, and hopefully, after the experience of the General Studies week, girls will be ready and focused to approach their final year of study with more of an idea of what they are working towards. Thank you as ever for your support of the Study Extension Programme.
