Physical Education

At Wychwood sport and fitness are integral to the life of the school. Through a broad and varied curriculum pupils are encouraged to develop an understanding of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and in turn develop a love for physical activity which will continue throughout their lives.

Lessons focus on expanding pupils’ skills and talents across a range of activities, as well as building confidence and developing leadership skills. Where possible pupils are split into smaller groups to ensure every pupil achieves their very best in an area of physical activity they enjoy. They are then encouraged to pursue that sport or activity either down a participation or a competition pathway.

Sports covered in our curriculum include:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Dance
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Fitness
  • Netball
  • Rowing
  • Rounders
  • Rugby (touch & 7’s)
  • Swimming
  • Tennis

Each term culminates in whole school house competitions in the focus sport of that term. Pupils compete for their house giving all pupils the chance to experience competition.

Our curriculum is supplemented with a full extra-curricular sports programme, which takes place during prep time after school. Pupils can compete in regular fixtures in the focus sport of each term, or they can join the extra-curricular clubs on a participation basis.

Facilities
Lessons and extra-curricular clubs take place both onsite and offsite. Our onsite facilities include a tennis court, netball court, two badminton courts, a small hall with trampolining facilities and a new fitness suite. Our school field contains a full size football pitch and three 7 aside hockey pitches. During the summer term it is set up with a 300m athletics track with long jump pit and throwing areas, as well as two rounders pitches. In addition, we also use several external facilities including the University of Oxford’s 25m pool, Hinksey Sculling clubs’ boathouse and the 5G pitch at Oxford Harlequins RFC.
